E/I
E/I is short for “educational” and “informative.” In the U.S., all full-power over-the-air stations must carry at least three hours of this type of programming targeted at children 16 and younger. Also known as the Children’s Television Act and Kid Vid, many stations in the U.S. meet these FCC requirements by airing programming on weekend mornings. The trend has been to provide documentary and reality-style programming aimed at children over the age of 12. Any programming targeted at children under 12 has more restrictions on advertising. TV stations are required to display an “E/I” icon on-screen during its programming meant to meet this requirement.
