Networks add special opens, graphics for Comey testimony

CBS started the top of the hour with a fullscreen graphic but did not use an announcer, instead relying on its anchors to intro the segment.

In some ways, CBS’s logotype seemed to be more in line with ABC’s typical style and even seemed to go in the text heavy direction of ABC by adding the words “Former FBI Director” above the more prominent “James Comey Testimony” branding.

The opening graphic also included the words “CBS News Special Report” and imagery of Comey and the FBI seal overlaid with a blue and red gradient.

A 3D rendering of the Capitol dome was used a primary graphic element, keeping the look in line with the the cleaner, lighter look CBS uses on both “CBS This Morning” and the “CBS Evening News.”

During the start of its coverage, CBS also used a small, centered rectangular box with the same branding.

Once coverage began, the network switched to using a hybrid design that incorporated the Capitol element mixed with a look that its streaming channel, CBSN, also used, that featured a blue box with beveled outline and floating “Live” and “Special Report” bugs along with the branding in the lower right.

On the CBSN version of the feed, the CBSN logo was inserted in the space to the right.
