How to make your brand’s Twitter, Facebook profile pic work in new circle format

Square logos

Brands with square logos were probably quite content with the old Twitter profile pic layout — but now it’s no longer hip to be square (according to Twitter, at least).

WTNH, the ABC affiliate in Hartford, Connecticut, for example, has a bold square-shaped and boxy “8” logo that gets just slightly clipped off in the new circular logo setup.

The fix: Unfortunately, for brands wanting to maintain the square shape, the options are a bit limited with the new circular layout. The most straightforward option is probably to shrink the logo down to fit in the square safe area with some extra spacing around the corners. However, the downside to this is the logo becomes significantly less prominent in the space. Alternatives include dropping the containing box altogether and just using the glyph, against a background. The downside to this approach, however, is that it can drastically change the look and feel of the logo.
