How the networks covered the 2018 midterm elections

PBS’s unique color palette of a deep blue-violet and pink-orange red set in a gradient, was used for both its on-screen and on-set graphics.

PBS used the normal ‘News Hour‘ set — which is already red, white and blue. Three video panels were brought in and placed in front of the set, allowing room for the cameras and floor crew.

In addition to being used in wide shots with generic ‘Vote’ graphics, the triptych of video screens was also used for interactive data presentations — with portions of the main set just visible above the low ‘wall’ created by the panels. PBS also inserted simple red, white, blue and gray tickers and data boxes along the bottom of the screen and — during select times — in the lower right corner.

The set’s white walls with red and blue accents were complemented by the fullscreen graphics used during coverage — which used a clean and simple design.
