‘Today’ uses color to reveal if Dylan Dreyer is having a boy or a girl

NBC News‘ “Today Third Hour” used studio lighting cues to help meteorologist and co-host Dylan Dreyer reveal the sex of the baby she’s expecting.

During the third hour of the show, most of the “Today” team gathered to discuss Dreyer’s news — including Al Roker and Peter Alexander, who joined remotely.

The show then had the hosts guess the baby’s sex — and had Dreyer’s husband, Brian Fichera, and her son, Calvin, help reveal that the baby is male with the help of a flurry of blue lighting and effects.

Not only did the color changing LED around Studio 1A’s video wall shift to blue, but so did the studio’s sculptural rendition of the “Today” logo as well as the backlit panel that serves as a “sliding door” entrance to the studio from a backstage area where Calvin and Fichera entered, with Calvin in a remote control toy blue car.

The video wall graphic also “showered” the studio with blue confetti before changing to read “It’s a boy!” while bubbles floated through the air.

“Today” regularly uses the color changing lighting in its studio to help match the mood and topic of various segments — often pairing the lighting cue with video wall graphics.
